How to Reverse the Signs of Aging

Botox and expensive creams might come to mind when you think of ‘anti-ageing’ but there is another way to turn back the clock. World-renowned naturopathic doctor and author of Reverse the Signs of Ageing[1] Dr. Nigma Talib[2] believes we can transform our skin by changing our diet.

This year’s Oscars goodie bag included Dr. Nigma Talib’s book and she is a familiar name amongst the red carpet elite; her client list includes Sienna Miller, Penelope Cruz and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Honestly Healthy was privileged to be able to spend some time with the sought after skin doctor and grilled her on everything we all want to know about reversing the signs of ageing:

What causes skin to age prematurely?

Sugar is one of the biggest agers. It effectively starts pulling on the collagen fibres and prevents collagen from rebuilding itself. In my practice I see a lot of what I call ‘sugar face.’

You are renowned for being able to diagnose someone’s diet by looking at their face. Can you explain how this works?

Over time I have identified skin ageing symptoms for ‘Wine face’ (pronounced lines between nose and mouth and feathery lines around the eyes) ‘Gluten Face’ (puffiness in the cheeks) ‘Sugar Face’ (forehead wrinkles, acne and a grey hue) and ‘Dairy Face’ (darkness under the eyes, chin spots).

So is the secret to anti-ageing to cut out these four items?

Good skin comes with clearing out the bad foods and eating fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants - like watercress – as well as foods high in vitamins A, C and E. It’s also important to clear out the toxins, especially the hormone mimickers that you will find, for instance, in plastic bottles.

You have coined the term ‘Digest-Ageing’ what does it mean?

It means you are prematurely ageing through your digestion. Having good digestion and absorption is key so it’s important to find out what your body does and doesn’t like and stop being in denial! For some people that might be garlic, for others it will be gluten. In my 28-day program I challenge people to give up gluten; afterwards many people notice they have a more chiseled – rather than puffed - face.

In the US, Dr. Nigma’s book is available under the title: Younger Skin Starts in the Gut [3].
