What lead you to train to become a nutritionist?
I’ve always had a passion for food and wellbeing, however in my late teens and early twenties due to a variety of influences I suffered from a deterioration in my own health. I had severe hormonal and gastro-intestinal imbalances. Conventional medicine wasn’t helping and in some cases making things worse. I decided if I wanted to be ‘well’ again I needed to take my health into my own hands. I started my path of knowledge and understanding of nutrition. I healed myself and realised that I could do something I loved as career and help others heal themselves. It was a no brainer really so I took myself back to university to get a degree in my passion- nutrition. I wanted to be as well qualified and as informed as possible.

What is your approach to letting your hair down – do you allow yourself to enjoy a glass of wine and a naughty treat? What is the best way to look at this balance?
Absolutely life is for living! Stress is possibly the most harmful thing to our health in the 21st and that includes stressing over food and lifestyle. I listen to what my body needs, sometimes a good sociable night out is what I need, but other times I need to stay home and nourish my body. As my body is now on balance I don’t crave ‘naughty’ foods. I prefer foods that are homemade or made from quality produce.
I don’t do it consciously any more but I would say 70% of the time I have a strong natural focus of healthy eating and lifestyle and 30% I don’t worry so much.
Check out our 70/30 rule for more info on how to balance your alkaline diet.

The Honestly Healthy alkaline way is all about a lifestyle rather than a diet – what else do you do to enrich your alkaline lifestyle and why?
Yoga would be a big one for me! I am yoga teacher as well as being a nutritional therapist. Yoga works on so many levels, the physical, emotional, mediative, calming, empowering, self development the list goes on. On top of yoga I love to be active and outside, I have an awesome dog who gets my out of the house and to the park come ran or shine.
I place emphasis of self care in terms of seeing other practitioners for massage, acupuncture etc, as well as just giving myself time and space to stay well grounded and unwind.
I have a wonderful husband, friends and family who are positive and supportive people. I believe this is really important stay happy and healthy.

You have written about ’5 Tips For Happiness’ on the site, how do health and happiness go hand in hand for you?
You can’t have health without happiness and you can’t be happy without your health. In my experience the times when I have been unhappiest are the times when my health has suffered and I’ve been unhealthy. If course happiness can sometimes be out of our hands and few people are happy all the time. But as with physical wellbeing, emotional wellbeing is something we should always strive for and help ourselves achieve.
